According to statistics, people consume more than 62 million tons of clothing each year. That's a lot of clothes.
And it has a big impact on the environment, too. It's second only to petrochemicals as one of the world's largest sources of pollution—and when the world's population grows to 8.5 billion in 2030, it's predicted that the apparel industry will surpass the petrochemical industry as the world's largest source of pollution.
Soil pollution: We throw away an average of 30 kg of clothing every year. Only 15% of the clothing is recycled or donated, the rest is sent to landfills, landfilled, or incinerated.
Today, 72% of clothing is made of polyester, which is difficult to biodegrade by nature because of its plastic content—and may take at least 200 years to decompose!
